Neil The Wine Tipster
Neil Phillips

Professional wine and champagne expert, presenter and racing pundit, Neil Phillips, has combined his three lifelong passions: champagne, wine and horse-racing to forge a unique career.

Having graduated from Sheffield with a BA in Urban Studies, a city he had chosen for its live music scene, his life changed from beer-flinging, pogoing punk to champagne sipper courtesy of his parents. He accompanied them to a Chardonnay blind tasting event which became a pivotal moment in his life, leaving his graduate job behind and enrolling on a Wine & Spirit Education Trust Diploma course.

He worked as a retail manager at Moreno Wines and began presenting its wine club tastings quickly identifying the customers demand for advice and knowledge about what they were buying. Neil later spent time in sales and marketing at Pernod Ricard which led to presenting at shows and events with chefs. Talks on radio about different brands, including Lindauer and Jacob’s Creek followed as well as developing a passion for champagne after meeting International Wine Specialist, Serena Sutcliffe from Sotheby’s. Neil then went on to become UK ambassador for G. H.Mumm and Perrier-Jouët (both owned by Pernod Ricard), which developed into presenting on a freelance basis for the champagne houses of Canard-Duchêne, Pol Roger, Pommery, Tattinger, Jacquart, Autréau, Heidsieck & Co and Laurent-Perrier. ‘I do a lot of promoting and presenting at events, launches and dinners each year for these prestigious clients,’ says Neil. ‘It’s a role I never tire of!’ Neil also works on wine and food pairing presentations with top chefs, including Raymond Blanc, Michael Caines, Theo Randall, Alexis Gauthier and René Redzepi.

The Wine Tipster Pic 5Under the name of The Wine Tipster, Neil has added his passion for horseracing to the portfolio. ‘I was always around horses growing up near Stroud, and I also love maths and analytical thinking so enjoyed studying the form. This has since created a unique opportunity to combine my love of champagne and horse-racing.’ He is a successful racing pundit and is the tipster and sommelier for Jockey Club Racecourses, which includes Cheltenham. Aintree, Newmarket and Epsom. The Wine Tipster has appeared on Channel 4 Racing, Racing UK, Cheltenham Racecourse Radio and he has broadcast from Royal Ascot . He is also the On The Box columnist for Racing Plus and he travels the country attending race meetings and pundit dinners. In 2013, he even had a racehorse, ‘Wine Tipster’ named after him! Wine Tipster won his first race at Gulfstream Park, Florida.

His diary for 2017 is packed full with high demand for his presenting skills at many of the UK’s major food festivals and events. They include Prosecco Consortium DOC and Grana Padano DOP masterclasses at the prestigious gastronomic festival, Taste of London. Neil is also a regular fixture at The Ideal Home Show, Tesco Wine Fairs, Foodies Festivals and in The International Wine Theatre at The Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival.

Between Festivals, he also presents for San Pellegrino and Nespresso. Neil has been a Nespresso Coffee Sommelier ™ presenter since 2013 at their Connoisseur Club member masterclasses held in their boutiques in Edinburgh, Manchester, London and Bluewater. Since 2011 Neil has been the UK Ambassador for the very popular San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna mineral waters. For San Pellegrino, Neil has presented with chefs René Redzepi, Theo Randall and Alexis Gauthier and will be working with San Pellegrino – sponsors of the International Young Chef competition in 2016.
